Ester Muñoz warns of Spanish pension system instability

Ester Muñoz, spokesperson for the Partido Popular in the Congress of Deputies, has drawn attention to the sustainability of the Spanish pension system. Muñoz warned that the current model is unviable and faces a crisis due to the mass retirement of the baby boom generation.

Critics and economic analyses suggest that social security contributions are insufficient to cover annual costs exceeding 190,000 million euros. Data from the Bank of Spain and the Institute of Economic Studies indicate a structural deficit, noting that the average retiree receives significantly more than they contributed throughout their working life. The current system relies on massive transfers from the General State Budgets and increased public debt to manage the gap between contributions and payouts.
