Estonia launches wildlife rabies vaccination campaign

The Estonian Agriculture and Food Board is conducting an oral rabies vaccination campaign for wildlife from September 21 to October 2, 2026. The operation targets foxes and raccoon dogs in Northeast and Southeast Estonia, specifically in areas up to 50 km from the Russian border.

The goal of the campaign is to keep Estonia rabies-free and to protect both humans and domestic animals from the fatal disease. The vaccination is administered via specialized bait containing encapsulated vaccine, which is distributed by helicopter. The bait is designed with a strong fish scent to attract wildlife.

Authorities advise that if a person finds a vaccine bait, they should leave it untouched. If there is a risk that children or pets might find it, it should be moved to a hidden location using gloves or a plastic bag. In case of accidental contact with mucous membranes or broken skin, the area should be washed immediately with plenty of soap and water, followed by medical consultation.
