Baltic and Hungarian wildlife rabies vaccination campaigns

Overview

In September 2026, Lithuania and Estonia initiated aerial rabies vaccination campaigns targeting wildlife to prevent the spread of the disease.

Lithuania’s State Food and Veterinary Service launched an operation to distribute 505,000 vaccine baits via aircraft across a 50-kilometer buffer zone along the borders with Poland and Belarus. The campaign targets various municipalities and utilizes the LYSVULPEN live vaccine. Authorities noted that while baits are not intended for residential areas, they may be moved by animals or pets, and residents are advised not to touch or destroy them.

Similarly, the Estonian Agriculture and Food Board conducted an oral vaccination campaign from September 21 to October 2, 2026. This operation utilized helicopters to distribute scented bait to foxes, raccoon dogs, and badgers in Northeast and Southeast Estonia, specifically within 50 km of the Russian border. To minimize human exposure, authorities stated the bait would not be dropped near cities, settlements, roads, water bodies, or active pastures.

In addition to the Baltic efforts, Hungary announced an oral vaccination campaign for foxes starting October 3, 2026, in its southern and eastern counties. To support this, Hungarian authorities are imposing grazing bans and dog quarantines in several regions, including most of Csongrád-Csanád County. During these periods, pet owners are required to keep dogs and cats confined or leashed with muzzles to prevent contact with wildlife.
