Estonia warns of Russian response to potential Baltic blockade
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated in an interview with The Times that invoking NATO Article 5 could lead to a blockade of the Baltic Sea, potentially cutting off vital Russian supply routes. Such a blockade would sever the maritime connection between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, effectively trapping the Russian Baltic Fleet in its bases and blocking approximately 60% of Russia's total oil exports that pass through the Baltic Sea.
Tsahkna noted that while such a move would create an "existential crisis" for Russia, there are currently no signs that Russia is preparing an imminent attack. However, Russian analysts have warned that if Kaliningrad is attacked or the Baltic is blockaded, Russian missiles could reach Estonia within five minutes.
These tensions follow previous statements from other European officials, including former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis, who suggested Kaliningrad could be a primary NATO target in a direct conflict, and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who proposed NATO occupation of the Russian exclave.
