Estremoz nursing home Influenza A outbreak leaves five dead

The death toll has risen to five following an Influenza A outbreak at the Lar da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Veiros in Estremoz, Évora district. The Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC) confirmed that laboratory tests identified the Influenza A virus in two of the deceased.

Since Wednesday, the local polyvalent emergency service has received nine patients from the nursing home. Among these, three deaths were recorded recently, while three patients remain hospitalized and three have been discharged back to the facility. These fatalities follow two previous deaths recorded last week when the outbreak began.

ULSAC stated that health teams are monitoring the situation and coordinating clinical follow-ups. The Public Health Department has conducted site visits to ensure compliance with infection control and hygiene measures.
