Ethereum EIP-8061 proposal targets faster validator exits
The Ethereum EIP-8061 proposal aims to streamline the staking process by expanding validator exit capabilities and consolidation capacity. Under the proposal, exit processing would no longer be subject to a fixed throughput cap; instead, exit capacity would scale based on the amount of active stake. At a hypothetical level of 36 million ETH staked, the proposal estimates exit capacity would increase to roughly four times current levels, while consolidation capacity would double.
Despite these changes to exits, the proposal maintains the existing activation cap for new stakes. This cap limits new ETH activation to 256 ETH per epoch, which equates to a theoretical maximum of 57,600 ETH per day. Consequently, direct stakers must still wait in a queue to begin earning native validator rewards. This delay can impact returns for pooled staking services, such as Lido, as more capital may sit in buffers awaiting activation while sharing existing rewards from active validators.
EIP-8061 is currently in the ‘Last Call’ phase with a review deadline of November 1, 2026. The proposal is part of the Glamsterdam roadmap, with potential mainnet inclusion expected in the fourth quarter.
