Ethereum faces quantum security evolution via EIP-8288

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed EIP-8288, a technical upgrade designed to significantly reduce the cost of quantum-resistant transactions. The proposal aims to move signatures and cryptographic proofs outside of the core execution process by integrating them into the mempool using recursive STARK proofs. This approach could potentially lower the cost of quantum-secure privacy transactions from approximately 10 million Gas to just tens of thousands of Gas.

Parallel research involving contributors from the Ethereum Foundation, Theta Labs, and other academic institutions has shown a rapid decline in the resources required for potential quantum attacks on Bitcoin and Ethereum. A technical study reported that the resource score for a critical transaction needed for such an attack dropped by 86 percent over two months, falling from 10.75 billion points to 1.496 billion points. While these findings do not represent an actual attack, they highlight the decreasing computational barrier and underscore the necessity of transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography well in advance of future threats.
