This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ethereum Foundation to achieve quantum resistance across the network’s execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029. The upgrade is intended for the upcoming I-Star fork, which follows the Hegota upgrade.

These developments come amid research indicating a rapid decline in the computational resources required for potential quantum attacks on networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum. One technical study noted that the resource score for a critical transaction needed for such an attack dropped by 86 percent over a two-month period, highlighting the urgency of transitioning to quantum-secure cryptography.
