Ethereum Foundation sets Hegotá upgrade priorities for quantum resistance

The Ethereum Foundation has established the technical priorities for the upcoming Hegotá network upgrade, focusing on censorship resistance and post-quantum security. Following a unified evaluation of 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) by its Protocol cluster, the Foundation designated two specific proposals as “must-ship” core components.

On the consensus layer, EIP-7805, known as “FOCIL,” was selected to strengthen censorship resistance by ensuring eligible transactions can be included in blocks without total reliance on centralized block builders. On the execution layer, EIP-8141, or “Frame Transactions,” was prioritized to introduce native account abstraction and provide a foundation for transitioning to quantum-resistant signature schemes.

The roadmap aims for Ethereum’s Layer 1 to be fully quantum-resistant across its execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029. This target aligns with similar post-quantum migration goals set by major technology firms such as Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft. While the Hegotá upgrade, expected around 2027, is not the final quantum-resistant fork, it serves as the critical architectural step to enable future transitions without requiring radical protocol changes.
