Ethereum Hegotá upgrade development

Overview

Ethereum developers and the Ethereum Foundation have refined the technical priorities for the Hegotá upgrade, currently targeted for 2027. The Foundation has designated EIP-7805 (FOCIL) and EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions) as “must-ship” components. EIP-7805 is intended to strengthen censorship resistance by ensuring eligible transactions are included in blocks without total reliance on centralized builders, while EIP-8141 provides a foundation for native account abstraction and post-quantum security.

Recent developments from the research organization Ethlabs have expanded the upgrade's scope to include four primary directions: enhancing censorship resistance, reducing transaction confirmation times, implementing native account abstraction, and optimizing Layer 1 performance. To address confirmation speeds, the “Quick Slots” proposal aims to reduce the current 12-second slot interval to approximately 10 seconds.

Further progress has been reported on EIP-8141, which seeks to separate the account that approves a transaction from the account that pays gas fees. This would allow users to settle costs using stablecoins or other assets via a paymaster rather than being strictly required to hold ETH. Vitalik Buterin noted that work on Frame Transactions has seen “substantial progress in recent months.”

The broader roadmap aims for Ethereum’s Layer 1 to be fully quantum-resistant across its execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029, aligning with migration goals set by firms such as Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
