Ethereum Hegotá upgrade to prioritize censorship resistance and stablecoin gas fees

Ethereum developers are outlining key technical priorities for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade, targeted for 2027. The research organization Ethlabs has identified four primary directions for the upgrade: enhancing censorship resistance, reducing transaction confirmation times, implementing native account abstraction, and optimizing Layer 1 performance.

A major focus is the FOCIL mechanism, designed to reduce censorship risks by ensuring validators reflect specific transaction lists. Additionally, the Quick Slots proposal aims to reduce the current 12-second slot interval, potentially to approximately 10 seconds, to decrease waiting times for block confirmations.

Significant progress is also being made on EIP-8141, known as ‘Frame Transactions’. This feature aims to advance account abstraction by separating the account that approves a transaction from the account that pays the gas fee. This would allow users to settle transaction costs using stablecoins or other digital assets through a paymaster, rather than being strictly required to hold ETH. Vitalik Buterin noted that work on Frame Transactions has seen substantial progress in recent months.
