Ethiopia military warns of civil war amid rising regional tensions
Ethiopia faces escalating tensions as renewed fighting in the north raises fears of a full-scale civil war. Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula stated the military is acting with ‘wisdom and restraint’ in response to provocations from the Tigray front.
Berhanu accused Eritrea, Egypt, and Sudan of providing financial and intelligence support to armed groups seeking to destabilize the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Eritrea has denied these allegations. The conflict has expanded beyond Tigray into the Afar and Amhara regions following the formation of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, a coalition of seven armed and political groups, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Amhara Fano National Movement, and the Oromo Liberation Army.
The TPLF has characterized the situation as a ‘full war,’ reporting a federal offensive involving drones and mechanized units. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian military reported killing 272 Tigrayan fighters and wounding 260 in a counter-offensive in North Wollo. Security developments have also led to the seizure of Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle and the suspension of Ethiopian Airlines flights to several northern cities.
