Ethiopia-Kenya border violence displaces over 14,000 people

Violent clashes between Somali and Oromo communities in the Ethiopian border town of Moyale have forced more than 14,000 people to flee into Kenya. The conflict, which reportedly began following a dispute over the display of the Somali regional state flag, has resulted in at least 12 deaths, with officials warning the toll may rise.

In Kenya, the Red Cross reports that over 10,900 displaced persons are currently residing in six temporary camps, while nearly 4,000 others have sought refuge with host families. Humanitarian agencies have issued urgent calls for food, clean water, sanitation supplies, and medical assistance to prevent the spread of diseases like diarrhea.

Kenyan lawmakers have called on President William Ruto to intervene diplomatically to end the violence and ensure the safety of civilians. Local leaders in Marsabit, Wajir, and Mandera are also urging increased border security and international humanitarian aid to address the growing crisis.
