Oromo-Somali conflict in Moyale

Overview

Clashes between Oromia and Somali regional forces in the Ethiopian border town of Moyale began following a dispute over the raising of a Somali regional flag in a jointly administered area. The violence, involving heavy weapons, initially resulted in at least nine deaths and dozens of injuries.

The conflict triggered a significant humanitarian crisis as thousands of people fled across the border into Kenya. While early estimates suggested approximately 2,500 displaced persons, subsequent reports indicated much higher numbers. By late October, displacement figures reached over 14,000 people, with many residing in temporary camps or with host families in Kenya.

Humanitarian agencies and the Kenya Red Cross have called for urgent assistance, including food, clean water, medical supplies, and sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks. In response to the escalating situation, Kenyan lawmakers and local leaders have urged diplomatic intervention and increased border security to address the instability.
