Seven Ethiopian armed groups have announced the formation of a new coalition called the Alliance for Survival. The alliance aims to overthrow the federal government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and establish an inclusive transitional administration.

The coalition brings together several major opposition forces that have previously been adversaries, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Amhara Fano National Movement, and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Other members include the Ogaden National Liberation Front, the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front, the Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement, and the Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement.

According to TPLF Vice President Amanuel Assefa, the groups have been in discussions for over a year. Fano leader Zemene Kassie is expected to chair the alliance. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions and recent clashes in the Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia regions, raising concerns about a potential return to large-scale conflict in the country.
