EU adopts energy grid package to speed electrification and cross‑border interconnections

On 26 June, EU member states approved the Council’s negotiating position on the European Grids Package, a legislative set that will modernise and expand the bloc’s electricity, hydrogen and gas networks. The proposal revises the TEN‑E Regulation and adds a new EU directive on authorisation procedures, aiming to coordinate planning, simplify approvals via a single digital portal and boost security‑of‑supply projects. Unused revenues from overloaded grid sections will be redirected to cross‑border projects, starting at 10 % in 2028 and rising to 25 % by 2031.

At the same time, Moldova’s government announced a streamlined regime for strategic energy projects that have mutual interest for the EU and Energy Community states. The new framework grants accelerated approval for such projects, aligning Moldova’s process with the EU package and supporting regional energy integration.

The Council will begin inter‑institutional talks with the European Parliament under the upcoming Irish Presidency, targeting formal adoption of the legislation by 2026.
