EU Advances AI Gigafactories as CMMI Unveils Governance Model
The European Commission is set to approve the call for participation in its plan to build five AI gigafactories across the bloc. Spain has submitted a public‑private consortium, with the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation holding 47.99% of the capital, Catalonia 1%, and Santander, ACS and Telefónica sharing the remaining 47% equally, complemented by Multiverse Computing’s 4%. The Spanish government has pledged €719 million to the consortium and €300 million to EuroHPC, supporting sites in Tarragona and San Fernando de Henares with an initial €1.5 billion investment and a total projected spend of €4.5 billion. The bid will compete with French, German and Italian consortia under the EU’s €20 billion InvestAI fund.
Meanwhile, CMMI Institute has launched the CMMI AI Maturity (CMMI AIM) model to help European organisations govern AI responsibly amid the EU AI Act, NIS2 and DORA regulations. The framework offers visibility into AI maturity, standardized practices, a clear roadmap and ROI measurement, aiming to close the gap between AI adoption and disciplined governance, as noted by CMMI’s vice‑president Ron Lear.
