EU advances European Digital Identity Wallet to streamline administration

The European Union is preparing to launch the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, a cross‑border digital identity solution that will store documents such as national IDs and driver’s licences, enable digital payments and allow electronic contract signing. The initiative aims to create an interoperable, regulated and privacy‑friendly ecosystem that reduces costly manual checks and fraud.

According to a guest analysis, the success of the wallet hinges on building trust and clear use cases for citizens, businesses and public services. The design includes a non‑discrimination principle so that multiple wallet providers can coexist while meeting the same technical and regulatory standards, fostering competition and user choice.

The German federal government plans to approve the cabinet draft that formalises the EUDI Wallet’s introduction, describing it as a key project expected to cut billions of euros in administrative expenses across the EU.
