European Union unlocks 6.6 billion euros for Ukraine military aid

European Union member states have reached an agreement to release 6.6 billion euros from the European Peace Facility (EPF) to support Ukraine. The decision ends a long-standing deadlock that began in 2023 due to a veto from Hungary.

The funds are designated for three primary purposes: 900 million euros will support the EU Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine, 1 billion euros will be used for new joint procurement of military equipment, and 4.7 billion euros will be used to reimburse EU member states for previous military aid provided to Kyiv. Some member states have indicated they will redirect their reimbursements toward further military aid for Ukraine.

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas stated that the move is a response to Russian hybrid attacks intended to intimidate Europe into reducing its support. The EPF is an exceptional financing mechanism that operates outside the standard EU budget to provide military and defense assistance to third countries.
