EU agricultural markets see shifting fruit and beef trends
Agricultural trade trends in the European Union show diverging paths for different product groups. In the first half of 2026, fruit trade expanded due to high demand for products grown in different climatic zones that supplement EU supply. Conversely, the trade of vegetables saw a decline.
In the meat sector, beef production across the EU-27 and the United Kingdom faced a tightening supply, with annual production dropping 4 percent by February 2026. Significant declines were noted in Ireland (-14 percent), Poland (-8 percent), Germany (-4 percent), France (-2 percent), Italy (-2 percent), and the UK (-1 percent). While production in the Netherlands and Spain saw slight increases, the overall EU cattle population continues to shrink.
Beef prices remain high but have begun to stabilize. Import volumes are expected to rise, influenced by the EU-Mercosur agreement. However, the European Commission is set to suspend certain animal-origin imports from Brazil starting September 3, 2026, due to concerns regarding compliance with EU antimicrobial regulations.
