EU allocates 134.8 million euros to Spain and Romania for disaster recovery

The European Union has mobilized 134.8 million euros from the EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to assist Spain and Romania in recovering from severe natural disasters experienced in 2025.

Spain will receive 120.5 million euros to address damages caused by prolonged drought, extreme heatwaves, and three major waves of wildfires. The most lethal fire occurred on August 8, resulting in eight deaths and widespread evacuations. The funds are intended for environmental restoration, strengthening fire defense infrastructure, sustainable irrigation projects, and repairing critical infrastructure such as roads and power lines.

Romania is allocated 14.3 million euros following heavy rainfall and flooding in the Centru, Sud Muntenia, and Nord-Est regions during late May and early June 2025. These floods caused significant structural damage, including the erosion of the Corund riverbed near the Praid salt mine, which damaged hydrotechnical infrastructure and caused power outages. The financial aid will support emergency operations and regional recovery efforts.
