EU and G7 Commit €580 Million to DRC Ebola Outbreak Response

The European Commission announced a €493 million package of humanitarian aid and health‑security support for the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri province. The aid covers frontline medical assistance, vaccine and treatment research, humanitarian relief for the Great Lakes region and longer‑term health‑system strengthening. At the G7 summit in the French Alps, leaders issued a joint statement urging a strong, coordinated response, noting the outbreak’s designation as a public‑health emergency of international concern and praising existing US and EU programmes. Partner countries Egypt, India, Kenya and South Korea also pledged support.

Tunisia, through a virtual high‑level meeting, reaffirmed its backing of African and international efforts, emphasizing cooperation, epidemiological surveillance and early‑warning systems. The DRC health ministry reported improved testing capacity after receiving over 4,000 kits from the Africa CDC, enabling rapid results. The outbreak has produced 837 confirmed cases and 196 deaths, with 29 deaths reported in a single 24‑hour period.
