EU and United States approve transatlantic trade deal

The European Union’s member states have ratified a new trade agreement with the United States. Under the deal the EU will eliminate tariffs on American industrial products and certain agricultural goods, while Washington commits to a 15 % ceiling on tariffs imposed on EU exports.

The pact includes a “sunset” provision that ends the agreement at the close of 2029 and allows the EU to suspend it if the United States breaches the terms. It is intended to ease the tense transatlantic market after President Trump threatened fresh tariffs and previously blocked the deal over issues such as Greenland and a U.S. court ruling.

Unresolved disputes remain, notably over U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium and EU technology regulations. Both sides are also negotiating subsidies for the aerospace sector as the five‑year cease‑fire on $11.5 billion of retaliatory duties expires on 11 July. Talks to extend the suspension of countermeasures are ongoing.
