EU antimicrobial rules drive gut‑health solutions in livestock production

The European Union has updated its regulations on antimicrobial use in animal production, requiring exporting countries to meet the same sanitary standards as EU producers. The move targets the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance and encourages more sustainable, preventive livestock systems.

Kemin, a nutrition‑technology company, says the new rules are prompting wider adoption of gut‑health tools such as next‑generation probiotics (e.g., Bacillus subtilis PB6), essential oils and plant extracts. According to Kemin specialist João Ronchesel, “the discussion is not about eliminating antimicrobials but using them more responsibly and expanding the toolbox for animal health”. These technologies aim to improve nutrient absorption, boost immunity and reduce dependence on antibiotics across the livestock value chain.
