EU Nations Ratify Transatlantic Trade Deal with United States
EU member states gave final approval in Luxembourg a week before the United States' Independence Day, allowing the full implementation of the EU‑US tariff agreement that was designed to avert a trade war. The deal eliminates remaining EU duties on US industrial goods and grants better market access for US seafood and agricultural products. It also includes a safeguard clause that lets the EU suspend benefits if the United States does not meet its obligations, such as reducing tariffs on steel‑content products (e.g., washing machines) to a maximum of 15 % by the end of the year.
The agreement sets a fixed expiry date of 31 December 2029, with the European Commission required to assess its impact by 30 June 2029 and to propose any extension. The pact covers roughly 30 % of global trade and 43 % of world GDP, amounting to about €1.7 trillion in 2024. Cyprus trade minister Michael Damianos said, “We stand for a strong and open transatlantic partnership … but openness must be coupled with safeguarding our interests.”
