EU seeks US waiver of 15% tariffs on €150 bn of goods

The European Commission has compiled a list of hundreds of European products—including Roquefort and Pecorino cheeses, wines, spirits, olive oil, pasta, medical devices, electrical equipment, industrial robots and other machinery—valued at roughly €150 billion. The EU is asking the United States to suspend the 15% tariffs imposed under the 2025 Turnberry trade agreement for these items.

The EU has already fulfilled its side of the deal, removing tariffs on hundreds of American industrial and agricultural products as of 1 July 2026. Negotiations on the tariff exemptions have resumed after the United States previously refused to discuss them until the EU reduced its own tariffs on US goods. The EU also hopes to open talks on exemptions for steel and aluminium, which remain subject to 50% US duties. EU trade commissioner Matthias Jørgensen said the list targets products that are economically significant for the EU or have limited availability in the US market. EU exports to the United States fell about 30% year‑on‑year in the first quarter of 2026, underscoring the stakes of the talks.
