EU bans destruction of unsold clothing and footwear

The European Union’s Ecodesign regulation, which entered into force in summer 2024, will prohibit brands from destroying unsold apparel and shoes starting 19 July 2024. Companies must first attempt to donate the items to at least three social‑economy organisations or make them available on their own website, and wait eight weeks before any destruction is permitted.

Exceptions are limited to counterfeit goods, items that do not meet regulatory standards, or defective products that cannot be repaired. The rule is intended to push manufacturers toward more accurate production planning, longer product lifespans and circular business models. It also introduces a digital product passport that will provide information on quality, environmental impact and reparability. While the ban currently covers only clothing and footwear, the Commission may extend it to other product categories in the future.
