EU bans destruction of unsold clothing and shoes from July 19

From 19 July 2026 the European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation prohibits large companies from destroying unsold clothing, footwear and accessories. The ban will apply to medium‑size firms from 19 July 2030 and includes exemptions for safety‑related items, counterfeit goods and irreparably damaged products.

The EU estimates that 4–9 % of apparel and shoes are destroyed each year, generating roughly 5.6 million tonnes of CO₂ and wasting water, energy and raw materials. The new rule forces brands to improve production planning, extend product lifespans and prioritize resale, repair, reuse or recycling before any waste‑to‑energy treatment. Companies must also report annually the quantity and weight of discarded stock.

The measure aims to reduce waste in a high‑impact sector, encourage circular‑economy practices and cut the environmental footprint of the fashion industry across Europe.
