EU bans single‑use restaurant packaging, new rules start August 2026

From 12 August 2026 the European Union will enforce the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which phases out most single‑use sachets and small containers used in the food‑service sector. The ban covers items such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, sugar, coffee cream and soy sauce packets and applies to restaurants, cafés, hotels, bars and similar outlets across all EU member states.

Businesses will have to adopt reusable containers, dispensers or other sustainable packaging solutions. The measure aims to curb the large volume of plastic waste that is difficult to recycle, forming part of the EU’s broader strategy to reduce plastic pollution. Industry groups have warned of increased costs and logistical challenges, while consumer groups view the change as a positive step toward environmental protection.
