The European Union has transferred €1.4 billion of profit generated from interest on immobilised assets of the Russian Central Bank to Ukraine. The payment, announced by the European Commission on 3 August, is the fifth such transfer and covers income accrued in the first half of 2026.

Since the assets were frozen, they have produced a total of €8 billion in unexpected profit. Under the EU’s allocation rules, 95 % of the €1.4 billion will be channelled through the Ukraine Loan Credit Mechanism to help repay macro‑financial loans, while the remaining 5 % will be directed to the European Peace Facility for military and defence needs. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the funds are meant to ensure Russia “pays for the destruction it caused” and to support Ukraine’s continued resistance against Russia’s illegal war.
