Greenland receives 200 million euro EU investment package
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a 200 million euro investment package for Greenland, known as the Global Gateway Partnership Package. The funding, to be deployed during 2026 and 2027, aims to strengthen the partnership between the European Union and the Arctic territory.
During a visit to Nuuk, von der Leyen signed a joint declaration alongside Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The investment will target several strategic sectors, including critical raw materials, clean energy, satellite-based internet connectivity, hydropower, fisheries, education, housing, and sustainable tourism.
The move is seen as a way to reinforce the EU's presence in the Arctic and support Greenland's sovereignty following previous interest from US President Donald Trump in the territory. Additionally, the EU has proposed doubling its direct aid to Greenland to 530 million euros for the 2028–2034 budget period.
