EU strengthens Greenland partnership with investment package
Overview
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has concluded a visit to Nuuk, Greenland, where she signed a joint declaration with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to deepen economic and political cooperation.
The EU has officially pledged a strategic investment of 200 million euros, known as the ‘Global Gateway Partnership Package’, to be distributed across 2026 and 2027. This funding targets digital connectivity, including satellite and undersea cable communications, as well as sustainable energy, education, hydropower, fisheries, housing, and sustainable tourism. A specific allocation of approximately 9.1 million euros over five years is intended to improve satellite internet services in remote areas. A key component involves developing critical raw materials essential for the global technological transition, specifically graphite and molybdenum. The development of molybdenum is projected to potentially add 90 million euros annually to the local economy.
Looking toward the long term, the EU has proposed doubling direct aid to approximately 530 million euros annually for the 2028–2034 period. This initiative serves as a strategic response to geopolitical tensions in the Arctic and territorial interests expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Throughout the visit, von der Leyen emphasized respect for territorial integrity, international law, and Greenland’s sovereignty within the NATO alliance to bolster Arctic security and counter the influence of other global powers. Amid these deepening ties, Prime Minister Nielsen clarified that Greenland does not seek membership in the European Union.
