EU Commission extends temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, excludes men of fighting age

The European Commission has proposed extending the temporary protection status for people fleeing the war in Ukraine until March 2028. The proposal would exclude men of combat‑age, up to 60 years old, and those subject to military service obligations. Officials argue the measure aims to prevent forced recruitment of eligible men as Ukrainian forces face severe manpower shortages. The plan has sparked criticism that it undermines the principle of offering safety to those most at risk of being conscripted, and raises concerns about the selective application of EU asylum values.
