Greece Renames Super Fund to National Development Fund
Finance Minister Kyriakos Pirakakis announced at the Growthfund Investor Summit 2026 that the country's former “Super Fund” (Υπερταμείο) will be renamed the National Development Fund. The fund, which manages about €12.3 billion in assets, 23 subsidiaries and employs more than 25 000 people, will now focus on converting public assets into productive capital and accelerating investments in sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, data centres, energy, transport and logistics. The minister highlighted that Greece’s public debt is expected to fall to 119 % of GDP by 2029 from 154.2 % in 2024, with an early loan repayment of €6.94 billion saving over €200 million in interest per year.
In a related move, the government signed a concession agreement for the Kalamata International Airport “Captain Vasilis Konstantakopoulos”. The project will receive €120 million in investments, including €28.3 million in the first three years, and the state will retain a 10 % stake through the National Investment Fund. The airport is positioned as a gateway for the Peloponnese, handling over 92 % international passengers.
Opposition parties (PASOK‑Movement for Change) have criticised the renaming as a superficial re‑branding, demanding parliamentary oversight, transparency on the fund’s governance, and clarification on how public assets will be used for housing and security needs.
