EU Commission President von der Leyen to visit Armenia after pro‑EU election

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, will travel to Armenia in early July to meet Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The visit follows Pashinyan’s decisive parliamentary win, which is seen as a referendum on the country’s shift away from Russian influence toward closer ties with the European Union.

The EU has already committed €34 million to offset the impact of recent Russian export restrictions on Armenian goods and to support sectors such as agriculture, floriculture and other export‑oriented industries. The mission is intended to signal strong political backing for Armenia’s Western orientation and to deepen economic cooperation.

The trip also has side effects in Brussels, prompting the postponement of several EU legislative files, including a public‑procurement overhaul and proposals on the defence single market, innovation and livestock farming.
