Montenegro opens new border police facility in Zagorič

A new administrative building for the Montenegrin border police has opened in Zagorič, Podgorica. The facility will serve as the headquarters for the Border Police Sector and house the future National Coordination Centre (NCC).

Funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) under the 'EU support to migration and border management' program, the project cost nearly three million euros, with an additional half a million euros provided by the Montenegrin budget. The 1,400-square-meter facility spans four levels and includes 85 rooms, operational halls, meeting rooms, and dedicated space for drone operations and maintenance.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attended the ceremony, stating that the center is a milestone for Montenegro’s European future. She noted that the facility provides the tools necessary for the border police to monitor borders, exchange information, and coordinate with EU agencies, preparing Montenegro to eventually manage the EU's external borders and join the Schengen Area. Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić also emphasized that the center strengthens national border protection as the country advances on its path toward EU membership.
