EU officials warn Serbia over glorification of Ratko Mladic

European Union officials and lawmakers are reacting to plans by Serbian authorities to honor Ratko Mladic with state and military honors following his death. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that the glorification of Mladic, who was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity, is contrary to fundamental European values and has no place in the EU or candidate countries.

Several European politicians have called for consequences regarding Serbia's EU integration. Czech MEP Ondřej Kolar has urged the European Commission to consider suspending or freezing Serbia's accession negotiations and its integration into the Schengen Area. Similarly, Austrian MEP Helmut Brandšteter of the NEOS party called for a halt to both accession talks and EU fund payments until Belgrade explicitly rejects the glorification of convicted war criminals.

In a separate incident, a 43-year-old Bosnian citizen was handed a 15-day suspended prison sentence by a court after posting social media content that glorified Mladic, which authorities noted caused significant public unrest.
