EU Council Approves Tariff Regulations Under EU‑US Trade Deal

The European Union Council formally adopted two regulations today that put into effect the tariff commitments outlined in the EU‑US Common Declaration of 21 August 2025. The measures eliminate the remaining customs duties on United States industrial goods, grant preferential access for certain seafood and non‑sensitive agricultural products through quotas and reduced tariffs, and extend the suspension of tariffs on lobster imports, including processed lobster, from all countries under the most‑favoured‑nation rule.

The regulations also introduce reinforced safeguard mechanisms, allowing the European Commission to act swiftly if import volumes rise sharply enough to threaten EU producers, and to suspend preferential tariffs should the United States fail to honour its commitments. “We are committed to building a strong, open transatlantic partnership with our historic ally, but openness must go hand‑in‑hand with protecting our interests,” said Mihalis Damianos, Cyprus’s minister for energy, trade and industry.
