EU Council extends Russia sanctions for another year

The European Council announced today that it will extend the European Union's economic sanctions against Russia for a further 12 months, keeping the measures in force until 31 July 2027. The renewal follows the council meeting on 18‑19 June and is justified by “the continued actions of the Russian Federation that destabilise the situation in Ukraine”.

The sanctions, first introduced in 2014 and expanded after February 2022, cover key sectors such as trade, finance, energy and dual‑use technology. They include a ban on the import or sea‑transfer of Russian crude oil to the EU, restrictions on transactions for several financial institutions and crypto‑service providers, and the suspension of licences for certain Kremlin‑linked disinformation media. The EU said it remains ready to introduce additional measures while Russia continues to breach international law.
