EU crypto regulation expands from MiCA market rules to tax transparency

The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation has entered a significant phase of implementation, aiming to harmonize the crypto-asset market across the bloc. By establishing standards for transparency, governance, and investor protection, MiCA seeks to bring crypto-assets closer to traditional financial standards and reduce recurring fraud. However, the regulatory landscape is expanding beyond market supervision into tax transparency.

New frameworks, including the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) and the EU’s DAC8 Directive, are transforming crypto intermediaries into tax-information gatekeepers. While MiCA regulates how services are provided and how markets are protected, DAC8 and CARF address the informational challenges faced by tax administrations. These instruments facilitate the automatic exchange of information regarding cross-border wealth and crypto-related transactions, integrating digital assets into the existing global tax infrastructure.
