EU education spending reaches 4.7% of GDP in 2023

European Union governments allocated 806 billion euros to education in 2023, representing 4.7% of the bloc's GDP. According to Eurostat data, public spending on education as a share of GDP has seen a slight decline over the last decade, falling from 4.96% in 2014 to 4.65% in 2023.

Sweden allocates the highest share of its GDP to education at 6.8%. Other nations exceeding the 6% threshold include Finland, Iceland, Belgium, and Denmark. Conversely, Romania and Greece report the lowest shares at 2.97% and 3.33%, respectively.

The data highlights a distinction between total national financial effort and per-student spending. While GDP percentages reflect overall investment, per-student metrics account for purchasing power and individual resource allocation. Figures are expressed in purchasing power standards (PPS) to allow for comparable analysis across different national price levels.
