EU establishes new regulatory framework for New Genomic Techniques

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) recently held a session to analyze the new European regulatory framework for New Genomic Techniques (NGT) in the agri-food sector. The new Regulation 2026/1388 establishes a two-tier system for plants obtained through these technologies.

Category NTG-1 includes plants with minor genetic modifications similar to those occurring naturally or through conventional breeding. Once verified, these varieties will largely follow the same regulatory framework as conventional crops. Category NTG-2 encompasses all other genetic modifications.

FEPEX has welcomed the regulation, noting that these tools can help develop crops more resilient to climate change while improving sustainability and farm profitability. While the regulation entered into force on July 16, 2026, full application is expected by July 2028. During this transition period, Minister Luis Planas called for coordination between administrations, the scientific community, and the agricultural sector to prepare administrative procedures and necessary guidelines.
