EU Explores Role as Mediator in Russia‑Ukraine Conflict
European Union foreign ministers met informally in Cyprus to discuss the possibility of a EU‑led diplomatic initiative aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. Officials said the bloc could appoint a special negotiator to engage President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky, though they stressed the need to first define a coherent policy toward Russia.
Various former leaders have been mentioned as potential envoys, including former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, former chancellor Angela Merkel, former Italian prime minister Mario Draghi, and Finland’s president Alexander Stubb, who offered to serve if a ceasefire were in place. The discussion noted Putin’s relative weakness after more than two years of fighting but warned that the Russian leader has historically resisted European overtures. The EU remains steadfast in supporting Kyiv and backs Ukraine’s territorial position, contrasting with earlier U.S. proposals that entertained territorial compromises.
