EU Extends Russia Sanctions to a Full Year

The European Union’s 27 member states agreed to prolong their economic sanctions against Russia for 12 months, marking the first time the measures have been set for a year rather than the usual six‑month renewals. The sanctions focus on key sectors of the Russian economy, including revenue from fossil‑fuel exports, the financial system and the defence industry. The decision was announced by the European Council President and received unanimous support from all member countries.

The extension follows recent EU steps to bolster Ukraine, such as opening formal accession talks and approving a €90 billion loan for Kyiv, as well as adopting a joint declaration of support for Ukraine at the Brussels summit.

These actions signal continued EU pressure on Moscow while reinforcing financial and political assistance to Ukraine.
