EU Introduces New Low-Value Customs Duty and Mandatory Tachographs for Light Vans

From 1 July 2026 the European Union will end the duty‑free exemption for shipments whose intrinsic value does not exceed €150 and will apply a €3 per‑item flat customs fee. A fresh Commission guide adds new product‑identifier requirements, with voluntary use from July to October 2026 and mandatory submission from 1 November 2026. The rules affect all exporters, including those in Switzerland, and remove any preferential treatment under existing free‑trade agreements.

Starting 1 July (this year) the EU will also require intelligent tachographs on light commercial vehicles weighing 2.5–3.5 tonnes that carry out international freight. The measure, part of the EU Mobility Package, expands the previous tachograph obligation that applied only to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Companies, fleet operators and drivers must install the devices, record driving and rest times, and comply with new administrative and training duties, with sanctions for non‑compliance.
