EU Interior Ministers Convene on Ceuta Migration Crisis

EU interior ministers will meet by videoconference on Tuesday to coordinate a response to the sudden migration surge in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. In the past 24 hours, about 60,000 non‑EU citizens crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, the largest irregular border crossing ever recorded in Europe. Twenty‑two EU states, led by Italy and Denmark, sent a joint letter urging swift, coordinated action.

Italy has already suspended the Schengen agreement with Spain for one month, while France has deployed drones, aircraft and additional agents to reinforce its borders. The ministers are expected to discuss re‑introducing temporary internal border checks across the Schengen area and granting Frontex a stronger role in emergency situations. Italy also plans to propose the creation of migrant processing centres in third‑country locations, a proposal supported by Austria. The meeting aims to move from discussion to concrete measures to manage the crisis and prevent further destabilisation of EU external borders.
