Cyprus President Christodoulides to meet EU leaders on Cyprus issue and EU‑Turkey relations

President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus has been in direct contact with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen ahead of a meeting in Ankara where EU institutional heads – von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa – will sit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The talks are expected to address the Cyprus problem and the broader EU‑Turkey relationship. Christodoulides said he remains “in constant contact” with the Commission President and that the three leaders are aligned on Cyprus and EU‑Turkey issues.

Following the Ankara discussions, Christodoulides and von der Leyen have agreed to meet in Paris next week to review the outcomes. The Cypriot president will also attend France’s Bastille Day celebrations and the military parade on 14 July, after an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron.

The meetings are part of a wider diplomatic push, with the NATO summit in Ankara also featuring side talks between von der Leyen, Costa and Erdoğan, and a focus on regional security and the UN Secretary‑General’s references to the EU’s role in the Cyprus Good Offices mission.
