EU leaders pledge to reinforce Frontex following Ceuta migration crisis

European Commission leaders have pledged to reinforce Frontex, the EU's border agency, to ensure more agile and rapid responses to migration crises. This follows the mass irregular entry of approximately 70,000 to 80,000 people into the Spanish city of Ceuta in late July.

During a debate at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner emphasized the need to strengthen external borders and improve monitoring, including online platform surveillance to anticipate rapid mobilizations. He also called for accelerated work on a directive to combat migrant trafficking.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the situation by stating, “The border of Ceuta is the border of Europe and Europe will be there for you,” emphasizing that Ceuta is part of Spain and the EU. She advocated for the implementation of the Migration Pact to harden external borders and streamline deportations. The crisis in Ceuta occurred after Morocco eased border controls following a Spanish Supreme Court ruling regarding the return of migrants intercepted at sea.
