EU Leaders Push for Sanctions on Israeli Settlement Goods

In mid‑June the European Parliament staged a heated debate after a human‑rights group revealed that about 17 % of shipments labelled “Made in Israel” actually originated from illegal Israeli settlements, constituting widespread trade fraud. Lawmakers accused the EU of double standards, contrasting swift sanctions on Russia with inaction on Israel.

Following the debate, EU heads of government urged the European Commission to draft legal measures to restrict imports from the settlements. In the Brussels summit on 19 June, leaders from France, Sweden, Spain, Belgium and Ireland called for a ban, while Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia opposed it. The Commission is expected to present proposals by 13 July. The EU imports 15 times more from the settlements than from Palestinian sources, and the United Nations reports that more than 5,900 people have been displaced in the West Bank since early 2023. The discussions also touched on the EU’s rejection of Israel’s plan to control 70 % of Gaza and criticism of Israeli minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir.
