West Bank raids, crackdown & settlement expansion

Overview

Mid‑July 2026 saw a sharp escalation in the occupied West Bank. After coordinated raids that cut down more than 1,500 olive trees, demolished homes and killed several Palestinians in villages such as Tel near Nablus, Israeli forces intensified operations. On 23 July troops sealed off Nablus, entered nearby villages and set homes and agricultural land on fire, while settlers entered Areas A and B with army backing. The Palestinian foreign ministry called the episode a massacre; Israeli officials labeled the settler’s death a terror act. The following day the Israeli Defense Forces announced a major anti‑terror campaign in the Tal area north of Nablus, where one Israeli civilian and four Palestinians were killed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a broad crackdown that includes demolition of the attacker’s house, large‑scale weapon sweeps, suspension of work permits, road closures, the creation of new settlement outposts and accelerated legalisation of existing settlements. On 25 July a sweeping raid across the West Bank detained at least 66 Palestinians in Nablus, Ramallah, Jenin, Hebron, Bethlehem and Tulkarm – one of the largest arrest operations in recent weeks. These actions occur alongside a record‑high pace of settler attacks (an average of six per day) and the rollout of European‑aligned bans on goods from Israeli settlements announced by Belgium and the Netherlands. On 24 July Israeli forces carried out night‑time raids in the Nablus district, arresting around 70 Palestinians and expanding demolition rhetoric. The same day a tightened siege was imposed on the Salfit governorate, with village gates sealed and new checkpoints erected. The following day raids hit over 300 addresses, including a Nablus hospital, and orders were issued to clear 69 dunams of olive‑tree vegetation in the Nablus governorate.
